Earlier this year, Duro-Last® expanded our comprehensive line of roofing system solutions by launching two new innovative products – Duro-Last® Roof Pavers and Duro-Last® ProTerm™, both made out of recycled roofing material. Sustainability has been a part of the Duro-Last culture for more than 20 years, starting when John R. Burt came up with the idea of reimagining old PVC roofs and excess manufacturing scrap into resilient flooring, walkway pads, and concrete expansion joints. We are proud to be continuing that story by adding Roof Pavers and ProTerm to our list of sustainably-manufactured products.
Both of these new products started as ideas spurred from the John R. Burt Innovation Challenge held in 2017. This challenge encourages employees to submit their ideas for new products, and the most promising ideas are prototyped for evaluation. Only a select few were eventually moved into commercialization and made available to our network of contractors.
Roof Pavers are heavy-duty interlocking 24-inch by 24-inch pavers that are designed to protect Duro-Last Roofing Systems – as well as other types of roofing systems – from damage due to excessive traffic and maintenance work. They can also be used for rooftop patios, work areas or other high-traffic rooftop situations. The pavers lock together with interlocking tabs and the bottom has channels for water flow. Roof Pavers can withstand up to 120 mph winds, passed developmental burns equivalent to a Class A fire rating, and serve as an additional protective barrier against hail.
Duro-Last ProTerm is a termination detail for metal wall configurations. This product creates a flat termination surface and eliminates the need to cut pieces of wood to fit into the profile of the metal wall. ProTerm also features a pre-applied strip mastic with release paper for easy installation.
Given the high recycled content of both of these products, they are ideal for use with building projects pursuing LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) or Green Globes certification. Our goal is to start manufacturing these products with post-consumer roofing membrane collected through the Recycle Your Roof Program. Contractors who are removing old Duro-Last roofs are encouraged to utilize this program to recycle the roofing membrane instead of sending it to the landfill.
